Kael sacrifices his position within the vampire hierarchy and his safe, reclusive life, ultimately using the last of his strength to protect Elara. Though they succeed in stopping Alistair and releasing the cure which acts more like a vaccine, preventing further spread and offering some form of redemption for those who want it the world is forever changed. The movie ends not with perfect peace, but with a hard-won, tenuous hope for a different kind of future, highlighting the enduring struggle for understanding and the possibility of choosing one's destiny beyond one's instincts or origins.
